RICHARD BUNSIDE Born 1944 South Carolina folk artist

Burnside was in the armed forces for a short time, then worked as a chef in Charlotte, NC ("I was a world famous chef!" he claims). Haunted by night visions of ancient times, he found he couldn't rest channeled them in his painting.

"Gotta obey God," as he puts it. His paintings are filled with symbols and shapes, products of his visions.
